The Year Was 2004...

Myspace dominated the Internet, Google introduced Gmail, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) celebrated the one-year anniversary of the release of the National Do Not Call Registry, and Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, which was only available to Harvard students at the time.

In 2004, the Internet saw a rapid adoption among Americans, with 63% of American adults reported they were “online.”

However, as more people began using the Internet, concerning issues emerged: identity theft and fraud. 

In 2004, the FTC received more than 610,000 consumer fraud and identity theft complaints, with spyware and spam being two of the most concerning consumer issues on the internet.

Fast-Forward 20 Years…

Technology is now integral to consumers’ daily lives, and the Internet has drastically changed since 2004.

Social media platforms, smart devices, and online shopping have become essential for many people. However, as consumers increasingly rely on technology for various aspects of their lives, the threat of cybercrime continues to grow. Last year, the FTC received about 3.6 million reports of fraud and identity theft, marking a substantial increase from the 610,000 reports received in 2004.
